Dancer Spotlight: Callula Hahm-Taklender, '23

Callula Hahm-Taklender

11th grade, class of 2023

What is the best thing about being back in person? Is there anything that surprised you about being in the studio?

I really missed being in a studio and dancing on sprung floors. It’s so nice to be able move freely and travel across the floor! It’s also really nice to dance and move together in person again! It’s a different energy and environment. One thing that surprised me is how I still feel like a freshman. It just feels like an extension of freshman year and the quarantine was just a weird fever dream.

What is your favorite thing about LACHSA right now?

My favorite thing is being with my classmates in person and getting off zoom.

What are your goals for this year as a Dance Major?

My goals this year is to be more exploratory and to define my voice as a dancer and artist.

What is something you’re looking forward to experiencing this year as a Dance major?

I’m really excited to actually have a Spring Concert this year! I haven’t had one in person yet.

What is your favorite food?

Sushi or Poke bowls.

What is your favorite color?

Yellow. It makes me happy!

What is your astrological sign?

I’m a Taurus sun!

Do you have an outside hobby?

I like spending time outdoors and enjoy most outdoor activities that involve the mountains and/or water. I also like paper craft arts, baking, and thrifting.

What is your favorite type of music to listen to?

My favorite types of music to listen to are musicals, pop, and alternative music, but I kind of listen to everything.

What is your favorite type of music to dance to?

Either something super soft and relaxing or something with a lot of heavy downbeats. It really depends on my mood.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

If I could have any superpower, I’d have the power of flight. I’d hang out in the clouds and watch the world from above. A healing power would be cool too, I’d cure everybody of their depression and trauma.

Do you have any future summer plans that are dance related? Any summer intensives? Competitions? Workshops? Etc.

Nothing specific as of right now. I’m planning on auditioning for some intensives, but whatever I end up doing, I’ll be filling my summer up with lots of dancing!

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self?

Make the most of your time in the studio because you’re about to be stuck at home dancing in your tiny room for the next year and a half. Don’t worry about what you can’t control and focus on what you can. “Bend with the wind.” - Cynthia Morales, March 2020 iykyk ;)
