Student Spotlight: Kai Andrews '21

Kai Andrews

NAME, GRADE, PRONOUNS

Kai Andrews, He/Him/His.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ONLINE?

I like not worrying about going to a locker or getting to class in time, since everything is just in front of me.

HARDEST THING ABOUT ONLINE?

I don't get to see anyone, or have little outings like we would during lunch or after school. The little moments in between classes sometimes were highlights of my day, and I'm missing that.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ONCE WE ARE IN PERSON?

I'm excited to be able to move around in a proper space again. Being at home is fun and all but I would much prefer dancing on a Marley floor rather than old wood floorings.

HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED ONLINE?

I've learned how to dance without needing a mirror. At home, I don't have full-length mirrors to check myself in during class, so I have to trust myself a little more and be more aware of my body.

OUTSIDE HOBBY?

Outside of school, I like doing a bunch of stuff, but my favorite is just driving around the city. I love driving in general, and being close to LA allows me to cruise through whenever I need a break.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT LACHSA RIGHT NOW?

I like how diverse the classes can be. I am a dual major as of this year, so I take both dance and theatre classes during the week. Having the duality of two departments, and the school allowing us to take two different art genres as a regular curriculum is really special.

FAVORITE DANCE CLASS?

Ms. Yuka takes the cake here. I've always loved Yuka's classes (even when they are hard) and she gives off a radiant energy every day that I see her, in person or not.

FAVORITE LACHSA MEMORY?

One of my favorite moments at Lachsa has to be the opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar, in December of 2019. JCS is the first musical I was ever in, so that moment right before the lights dimmed always puts a smile on my face.

PLANS FOR FUTURE/COLLEGE

I have fully committed to Pace University for a BFA in Acting! I've always been involved in the film and stage industry and I'm really glad that I can go to college for it!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE INCOMING FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES YOU WISH YOU HAD? I know it may not seem like the most valuable piece of advice, but mental health is important! Negativity is way too apparent in the dance industry, so don't add more to your plate. If you stay positive, even during rough times, it can shine like a light to brighten someone else up. And that alone could do unimaginable things for someone who you may not even know. So keep a positive mental attitude and stay strong. You got this.
