Dancer Spotlight: Laila Takiyama '25

Laila Takiyama

9th grade/class of 2025

Pronouns: she/her

What is the best thing about being back in person? Is there anything that surprised you about being in the studio?

I’d say the best thing about being back in person is the hands-on learning and the sense of community. I think something I missed virtually was that connection with your peers and teachers, the authenticity of dancing in a space with people that inspire you.

What is your favorite thing about LACHSA right now?

My favorite thing about LACHSA right now is the diversity and individuality. Everybody here is so talented and unique, and it’s really nice to be among others involved in the arts in general.

What are your goals for this year as a Dance Major?

My goals for this year are to improve my artistry and become more flexible in other dance styles.

What is something you’re looking forward to experiencing this year as a Dance major?

Something I’m looking forward to experiencing this year is

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is really any Japanese food, including udon, sushi, and curry rice.

What is your favorite color?

Black and green are my favorite colors.

What is your astrological sign?

I’m a Libra!

Do you have an outside hobby?

I love to read and write. I’m also into editing.

What is your favorite type of music to listen to?

My all time favorites are alternative and rock, but lately I’ve been into rap.

What is your favorite type of music to dance to?

For ballet and improv, I like a good classical piece, and for combos I like soul and downbeat pop (Steve Lacy, Frank Ocean, The Marias).

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

My superpower would be something involving time, like time warping or time travel. I generally find the concept of time really interesting, and it would be cool to be able to manipulate an ever-present but invisible aspect of life.

Do you have any future summer plans that are dance related? Any summer intensives? Competitions? Workshops? Etc.

For the summer, I’m planning to go to the Ellison Ballet Variation Workshop for two weeks, along with my dance studio’s summer intensive.

What advice would you give your future senior self?

I would tell my future self to be open to new things and to be who she is, not someone she thinks others want her to be.
